Angry Stafford Group Ponders Trip to New York

Judie Brown, head of Stafford’s American Life League, is angry at comedian/talk show host Bill Maher for recent comments he made on his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher.

Stafford County Sun:

“If you have a few hundred followers and they let you molest a few hundred children, they call you a ‘cult leader.’ If you have a few thousand, they call you Pope,” said Bill Maher.

The comedian, who is admittedly against all forms of religion, went on to say that “cults get raided, religions get parades.”

Maher also called the Pope a “Nazi” during the same broadcast.

“If he had said anything about the Jews, Muslims or blacks he would have already been fired by now,” said Michael Hichborn, media advisor with ALL. “They expect Catholics just to turn the other cheek.”

Pope Benedict XVIActually Mr. Hichborn, if you knew what you were talking about, you’d know that Maher does have issue with all religions and basically people in general. Sad that the writer of this article did a lot more homework on Maher than did your group of outraged citizens. The idea that he’s only singling out Catholics is false. His previous show was called Politically Incorrect for a reason.

As for the Pope, he was a member of the Hitler Youth when he was growing up in Germany. Few people blame him for this because he probably had no choice whatsoever, but he technically WAS a Nazi. Maher pointed this out in the episode in question; he didn’t simply call him a Nazi and then just leave it at that.

The way the Catholic Church has dealt with pedophiles over the years is unforgivable. My wife, a Catholic herself, agrees with me. Every comedian on planet Earth has been making jokes about the church’s problem with sex offenders for years.

As for the Catholic Church being called a cult? What else is new? Three words: Bob Jones University.

In 2000, then-president Bob Jones III referred, on the University’s web page, to Mormons and Catholics as “cults which call themselves Christian.”

After South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond switched his allegiance to the Republican Party in 1964, BJU faculty members became increasingly influential in the new state Republican party, and BJU alumni were elected to local political and party offices.

National Republicans soon followed. Ronald Reagan spoke at the school in 1980, although the Joneses supported his opponent, John Connally, in the South Carolina primary. (Later, Bob Jones III denounced Reagan as “a traitor to God’s people” for choosing George H.W. Bush—whom Jones called a “devil”—as his vice-president. Even later, Jones III shook Bush’s hand and thanked him for being a good president.)

George W. Bush also made his pilgrimage to Bob Jones University in 2000. After he was elected President, he recieved this letter of congratulations from Bob Jones:

“In your re-election, God has graciously granted America — though she doesn’t deserve it — a reprieve from the agenda of paganism. You have been given a mandate. We the people expect your voice to be like the clear and certain sound of a trumpet. Because you seek the Lord daily, we who know the Lord will follow that kind of voice eagerly.

“Don’t equivocate. Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ. Honor the Lord, and He will honor you.”

Back in 2000, John McCain decried Bush for making a speech at the university. Today’s John McCain? He said he’d consider it if he were offered a chance to speak. Not surprising since, in the span of 8 years, he went from calling Jerry Falwell an “agent of intolerance” to speaking at Fallwell’s Libery University.

MaherBill Maher has had many guests on his show from the world of politics, both Democrats and Republicans. He’s previously endorsed Republican Congressman Ron Paul of Texas for President. Maher’s opinions are downright bizarre, and there’s probably not another person on planet Earth that doesn’t disagree with him on something.

Meanwhile, the American Life League is weighing whether or not to travel to New York and picket outside the offices of HBO’s parent company, Time-Warner. No word on whether or not they’ll picket HBO for broadcasting shows that use real footage of prostitutes “turning tricks” or the making of a gay porno film. Nope, apparently the comedian set them off.
